Very few of us have not downloaded shareware computer games. It’s convenient when you want some entertainment to almost instantly download a game for free, play it and purchase it only if you want to keep it. There’s only one problem and it's a major one: how to quickly find a game you might like.

There are several thousand shareware games available on the Internet. There are numerous sites dedicated to games, but they are poorly organized, typically divided into half a dozen categories with hundreds or even thousands of games in each.

It was time that someone make an archive of small games that would be easy for people to navigate, where games are organized by many factors, not just their genre. That’s exactly what the programmers at GameLinkage.com (http://www.gamelinkage.com) have created.

Every game has a multitude of characteristics. The same game can be a kids game, a puzzle game, a space game, and a logic game. Another can be a puzzle game and a board game, but be too difficult for kids. Game sites, however, list these two very different games in the same category. There's no way you could tell a kid's game from a challenging board game. Just like in the old movies where the US Cavalry arrives at the last moment, GameLinkage.com is here to save the day.

GameLinkage.com has assigned a list of properties and ranks to every game. You simply choose the exact kind of game you want. Let's say you want a game where you have to shoot from a spaceship. Just go to GameLinkage.com and select the genre. In this case it’s an arcade game. Then the most popular subdivisions of Arcades are displayed (action, pacman, space…). The list changes along with the site’s growing database. Selecting “Space arcade games” gives you a number of smaller subdivisions, one of which is “Shooter arcade space games”. This broadens into its own subsections letting you choose “Ship arcade space shooter games” and there you are! Now you have a much shorter list of games that match all your criteria. You can see small screenshots of each game to decide which to download. Click a title to get detailed information about it or download the game right away.

Here's another common situation: you like a particular game and want to find similar ones. The site provides “Linkage Explorer”, which shows you the 10 most similar games to any one you like.

GameLinkage.com lets you interactively navigate via links between similar games of various genres. You can start browsing from any game by clicking on “Locate this game in Linkage Explorer” on the game’s description page. Or you can start from a random game by selecting “Linkage Explorer” in the left menu. Linkage Explorer shows you the games that are most closely related to the current one. Move the mouse over a game title to view its screenshot. If you click on any of the related games (either its title or screenshot) it becomes “located in Linkage Explorer” and you will see the games similar to it. All games are indicated with one of four colors to let you know the game genre (red for arcade, blue for puzzle, green for cards or casino games, yellow for board games). You can open a game page for more detailed information or download the game directly from Linkage Explorer.

The site has thousands of games in its database (practically all modern shareware games that were ever released), so it’s extremely unlikely that no games can be found that satisfy your request. GameLinkage.com constantly grows as game developers daily submit their new games, so the lists are always fresh. This reviewer was so impressed he subscribed to the site's RSS news feed to stay up to date with all the new releases.
